Gavin Newsoms Glock Ban Fiasco
Online Oct 11, 2025
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1127, a firearm control bill that bans most Glock pistol sales starting July 1 2026. The law targets semiautomatic pistols with a cruciform trigger bar deemed readily convertible into machine guns using devices like a Glock switch. This points straight at Glocks, a reliable and popular handgun platform. Models like the G19 and G17 are now at risk, not for being dangerous, but because someone might illegally modify them.
The irony? Vice President Kamala Harris carried a Glock 19 as California Attorney General. Yet Newsoms law will block law-abiding citizens from buying the same firearm. Hypocrisy aside, the logic fails. Glock switches are already illegal under federal and California law. Instead of enforcing those laws, Newsom bans entire handgun categories based on what could happen. It’s like banning kitchen knives because they could be weapons or cars because they could be driven recklessly.
Supporters claim it’s about public safety. But this won’t stop criminals who ignore laws by definition. It just limits law-abiding Californians’ access to reliable self-defense tools. Newsoms approach isn’t principled governance; it’s pandering that misses the mark.
